School Visits by Kary

Picture
It's a privilege to do school visits. But, it can be a tough crowd.  If you talk down to them, you'll lose their attention. And if you don't bring it, they'll tell you. Most important, they're not interested in adult agendas.

My approach? When I walk through those doors I am 9 years old again and anything is possible.  Age is not a factor, only imagination, and believing!
My goal is to connect with them on a creative level. When they leave I want them to feel empowered and confident that they ARE illustrators. ...Because they are!

What to expect at Kary's school visits

A few of my friends at Jefferson Elementary.
I'll share my background and explain how I became a book illustrator. I’ll tell some personal stories and show samples of different stages in the illustration process. Using my current book title as an example, I’ll describe how a manuscript becomes a book. The presentation is designed to encourage budding writers and illustrators to create their own stories.  After our discussion we will work together to develop a character and setting. I’ll ask for ideas from the children and we’ll complete drawing in conjunction with our discussion.

Grade level: K - 6th
Presentation time: 40 minutes K-2nd 50 minutes 3rd and up.
Audience Size: 30 to 60 students preferred. I can do larger groups if screen is visible. The more children, the less personal interaction.

Preparation for teacher
I will use the story for examples during my presentation. So, the visit will be most successful if children are familiar with my current book, Dizzy.  I have books available for purchase and/or lending should teachers want to read the story prior to my visit.  In addition, there are Dizzy activities, coloring pages, how to draw the character and fun facts about Dolphins available to download on the publisher's website:  www.stonehorse.com.
